Callout 40 - 12th May 2019 - Glenmalure

At 23:37, on Saturday, May 11th, Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team and Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Team were tasked by An Garda Síochána to search for a missing paraglider. The paraglider launched near Blessington on Saturday afternoon, planning to fly towards Wexford.

The information-gathering phase of the search operation started immediately, and continued through the night. Given the very large search area, the operation was postponed until Sunday morning, May 12th. Search planning began early on Sunday morning when a group of experienced paragliders met mountain rescue (MR) personnel to assist in the search.

Working together, the paragliders and MR personnel established a search plan and began to deploy search teams. Irish Coast Guard helicopter, Rescue 116, was tasked to assist in the operation and began searching at 05:20. Shortly after 08:00 the missing paraglider’s body was discovered on a hillside in the Glenmalure valley.

MR personnel remained on scene and assisted the Air Accident Investigation Unit as they examined the scene. The paraglider’s remains were then recovered by MR personnel. The operation was stood down at 12:40. Our thanks to An Garda Síochána and Rescue 116 for their assistance in the operation. We are especially grateful to the group of paragliders who assisted in this search operation.

We offer our sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased. May he rest in peace.
