Petzl Myo RXD

8.7

Ever find yourself stumbling around in the dark as your head torch fades, wishing you’d changed the batteries or wish it just had some extra light to see what’s just across the river? Yeah me to!....

Recent developments in head torches have the answer to these problems. I was fortunate to get the chance to try one of Petzls more recent additions to their range, the Myo RXP, during a recent trip to the Alps and since then on several rescues.

For the techie lovers amongst us its techie head torch heaven, with more features than the space shuttle. There are 3 lighting modes, for which the user can set their own lighting level from 8 to 140 Lumens. For non techies, like me, don’t panic! because Petzl have it covered and have 3 already preset (low, medium and high power) and I will leave the explanation of lumens to others. As well as the three set levels there is also a boost feature, or as I like to call it the turn night time into day time button!  Like its predecessor, the XP, it also has the wide angle lens and filter, to focus the beam.

So why do I want 3 lighting levels (or 4 including the boost)? Well in simple terms we don’t always need the same amount of light for different activities a night walk on a good path may only require low- medium light, getting caught on a climb in fading light will require much more and the boast is definitely useful on a search for a short period to locate a person. Selecting the right light can better help to maintain the battery life, in broad terms: less powerful beam, less battery life used.

If it does have a down side it’s the buttons. Petzl, please make the ON-OFF / Lighting Mode button slightly bigger. I found it difficult to use in winter gloves. Oh, and the other hut users in the Alps didn’t appreciate the fact that its default switch on, was high power. Got some interesting looks from disgruntled Germans and French when I switched it on to head off to the loo at 1am…….

But all in all this is a small but powerful head torch with great worthwhile features, which has now become invaluable in my pack.
