Walk the Line - Registration is live! The challenge:
This unique event will bring you from the foothills of Dublin above Tallaght and Ballinscorney, along a line marking the boundary between the counties of Dublin and Wicklow, finishing in Marley park. Starting as night falls you'll wind your way across peaks such as Corrig, Seefingan, Kippure, Prince William's Seat and Fairy Castle, enjoy sunrise overlooking the mountains you’ve just climbed and finish at Marley Park in south Dublin just in time for breakfast.
You can now register for the event at: https://www.eventelephant.com/walktheline
The route:
The route is roughly 30 km long with plenty of challenging and varied terrain but it's achievable by any hill-walker with average fitness. We'll be marking any parts of the route where you might go astray, we'll have plenty of marshalls out on the hills and we don't intend to lose anyone or we'd have to go find them! We generally find it’s pretty easy to find Kippure at night – it’s marked by the biggest aviation warning light in Wicklow!
Naturally we'll have our experienced rescue and first aid personnel providing cover so you can be assured this event will be a safe and enjoyable challenge for hikers of all abilities. We’re eager to make this a fun and adventurous event and the emphasis is on participation rather than finishing first. We'll circulate a checklist for the minimum amount of kit required closer to the event so that you know what to bring along.
Sponsorship:
The registration fee is €25 per participant and guarantees your place for the event. We are asking participants to raise a minimum of a further €75 sponsorshipin order to participate in the event on the day bringing the total cost of participation to €100. Once you register we will send you a sponsorship card, some advice on raising the money and details of how you can get the sponsorship money to the team - we'll have a number of different methods available and there will be an option to suit everyone. You must have raised the minimum by the 24th June in order to participate and we have a fantastic prize for the highest amount of sponsorship raised by an individual.
The first step is to register which you can do at https://www.eventelephant.com/walktheline.
About the team:
The Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team is a voluntary112/999 rescue service, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, responding to those who find themselves lost and or injured in the mountains. It costs in the region of €45,000 - €50,000 to run the team every year. Fundraising is a constant challenge for the team and we want to use this event to raise cash for lifesaving equipment and have some fun doing it.
We cover a very large area between the south of Wicklow all the way to the Cooley Mountains so mobility is key to an efficient and fast response when people get into difficulty in the mountains. Over the last 5 years the callouts being handled by Dublin & Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team has increased in average from the 35-40 range to 55-60 per annum. To ensure a speedier response and get search parties on the hill quickly during callouts the team has decided to focus it's fundrasing efforts to source a third vehicle for the team. This 4-wheel drive vehicle would be stretcher capable and would be stationed at the team's well established base adjacent to the Garda Station in Roundwood. This would effectively be the only 4WD Ambulance in the centre of our operational area and we believe it is vital to ensure the continued high level of response and support provided by the team. The vehicle would also allow for additional safety for team members during the winter months whilst helping people who get stranded in their homes or cars. Already this year the team has provided assistance to Wicklow residents who needed to get to hospital but were unreachable by the normal ambulance services. As grant aid is currently reduced the Walk The Line event is vital to raise enough funds to enable the team to not only maintain but improve its high level emergency service which is provided on an entirely voluntary basis. |
